Here at the Last Line of Defence we aim to give every keeper the opportunity to develop as
goalkeepers through technical input but also to enjoy their role as a goalkeeper by incorporating a lot of fun and games into our goalkeeper coaching sessions. We will endeavour to cover as many aspects of
goalkeeping as we can whilst each keeper continues to work with us.
The goalkeepers role has changed drastically over recent years and we are more involved in the game itself compared to a few years ago!
We now not only need to be competent with our hands but also have to be good footballers as a lot of time we are expected to use our
feet especially with the introduction of the back pass rule.
Our aim is to give every keeper a better understanding of their role as a
goalkeeper not only as an individual but also within the team itself. We can be the catalyst for many attacking plays in the opponents half
with quick, decisive distribution as Peter Schmeichel was during Manchester United's dominance of the Premier League in the early '90's.
Below is a brief list of some of the topics that we will be covering during the goalkeeper training sessions:-
HANDLING (basic & advance)
DEALING WITH CROSSES
DISTRIBUTION (throwing & kicking)
ONE v ONE
COMMUNICATION & WORKING WITH THE DEFENCE
SET UP FOR SET PLAYS
SPEED OFF THE MARK
CATCHING HIGH BALLS
DOMINATING THE PENALTY AREA
The list is endless, but hopefully now you have some idea of how complex the role of goalkeeper really is and it is now our job to take all of you to the next level.
